How to play Velo Hunt

What is a Velo Hunt?

Velo Hunt is a self supported cycling based scavenger hunt. For the challenge we provide the distance of the ride and the 5 checkpoint items you need to find. From there, you plan your ride then head out on your bike to collect pictures of the checkpoint items to prove you have found them. Most of the checkpoint items should be common features found near most towns and cities. On each Velo Hunt there will also be some harder items that are still common but are not fixed to a location, like 'road works' or a specific vehicle such as a tractor or ambulance.

Virtual Velo Hunts

We also have virtual Velo Hunts which are completed on the Zwift gaming platform. You will need to have a membership with Zwift to take part in these, along with the relevant hardware requirements to run the game. The main difference with a virtual hunt is that the checkpoint items are fixed and the same for everyone. It will be a true test of how well you know the world of Zwift.

Velo Hunt Instructions

Check the checkpoints and Challenge Rules

Each Velo Hunt will have a set distance and 5 checkpoint items to collect. You need to make note of these before you start planning your route.

Plan your route

Use the route planner you are most familiar with to plan a safe cycling route that will cover the minimum challenge distance. The route will hopefully include all the required checkpoint items you need to find to complete the hunt.

Top Tip: Google Street View is the perfect tool for helping you find cycle friendly roads along with checkpoint items.

Ride your route and collect your checkpoint images

Remember this is a challenge, not a race so stay safe as you head out on your ride.

Record your ride using your favourite GPS service like Strava, Garmin, Apple, etc.

Checkpoint images should follow the individual requirements for that checkpoint. This includes requirements like having a specific word or object in the image. Every checkpoint image must include one of the following to prove the image was taken for the hunt:

  • A selfie of you, the Velo Hunter in every image wearing the same clothes for each checkpoint

OR

  • A unique mascot that poses with your bike for every checkpoint image. This can be something like a cuddly toy, a souvenir, a figure, etc.

OR

  • An image of your bike with the Monthly Velo Hunt "Checkpoint Code" attached to it. The code must be hand written on a piece of paper and clearly readable.

Checkpoint images are not required for Virtual Velo Hunts, just ride past them.

Save your GPS route - Join our clubs

Complete your ride and save it with the 5 checkpoint images attached.

To allow us to see it you will need to check some setting before you submit it:

Strava: The best way to allow us to see your Strava route is by making sure you have joined our Velo Hunt Strava Club. After that, all your rides will be presented to us, even if you have privacy settings as "followers only". If you choose not to join our club then you will need to make your ride public (everyone privacy option) which will mean anyone on Strava can view it.

Zwift: For virtual Velo Hunts on Zwift, the best option to present to us is through the Zwift Velo Hunt Club. You will need to join it first via the companion app. After you have completed your ride, you need to make sure the ride is posted into the group on the save screen. If you are unable to do this, then then you will need to change the privacy setting to public before submitting to us.

Other platforms: Please make sure you have your privacy setting set to public before submitting to us. Once the ride has been verified we recommend you change them to your usual settings again.

Top Tip: Double check that additional privacy settings are in place to make sure your home location is hidden while the ride is publicly available. Once the ride is verified by us, we recommend to change it back to the usual privacy settings.

Submit your ride on VeloHunt.online and wait for it to be verified

Submit your ride using the submission form on the Velo Hunt information page. We will manually verify the ride within 24 hours. When the ride is verified you will receive an email and then be added to our page as a successful Velo Hunter.

Order your medal

When you have successfully completed the challenge you will be able to order your Velo Hunt challenge medal. A link will be provided in your verification email.
